The Adventures of Tommy and Goldnugget became a reality by the glow of a campfire. In the darkness of night, the children of my family gathered around warm flames in search of stories. It was in their quest for adventures that they petitioned me, “Tell us a story.” Responding to their imaginative hunger, I opened my mouth and uttered the phrase, “There was once a boy named Tommy, and he had a dog named Goldnugget. Tommy loved Goldnugget, and Goldnugget loved Tommy.” Their enthusiastic approval inspired my imagination to take me to places where I had never been.

Initially, the art of oral storytelling was the outlet for sharing the adventures; young audiences within my family and the public school became captivated by the endearing characters of Tommy and Goldnugget. A creative spark ignited the desire in me to transcribe the oral stories onto paper. Within months, written adventures found their place on pages for endless entertainment.

Although descriptive wording of the written adventures is more advanced compared to the oral storytelling versions, biblical principles and character-building lessons of the stories remain consistent. Both forms of entertainment allow varying ages of children to learn essential truths within the adventures.

Many adventures contain pieces of my life and experiences as intertwined in the life and experiences of Tommy. The Scripture verses and lessons presented are truths written upon my heart. To the reader, the white space between paragraphs provides an area to record thoughts, questions, and revelations while investigating the purpose I had for writing the content. My hope is for the reader or listener to find the truth-filled treasures concealed by symbolism; these nuggets of hidden gold are for discovery.

 

Proverbs 25:2 – It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, but the glory of kings is to search out a matter.
